Khoroshenin strikes a first for Ukraine

Oleksii Khoroshenin became the Ukraine’s first ever European Poker Tour main event champion after taking down the Vienna leg from 19-29 March 2014.

A total of 910 players anted up for the main event but it was Khoroshenin who scooped the €578,392 top prize after beating Anthony Ghamrawi heads-up at Vienna’s Hofburg Palace.

The final session started with the average stack at 85 big blinds, which meant any chance of an early finish was out and it took 13 hours to crown a champion.

The final eight were home favourite Anthony Ghamrawi; Germans Timo Pfuzenreuter, Frei Dilling and Marko Neumann; Bulgarians Simeon Naydenov and Rumen Nanev; Spain’s Pablo Gordillo and Khoroshenin from the Ukraine.

The road to a conclusion began with the demise of Rumen Nanev in eighth place, followed to the rail by Frei Dilling, Simeon Naydenov, Timo Pfuzenreuter and Pablo Gordillo.

And then there were three, with a deal struck after some wrangling over the remaining prizepool. Germany’s Neumann took the largest cut and having banked €638,127 he was the next to bust out.

This left Ghamrawi and Khoroshenin to fight ito out for the title and €50,000.

Unlike the prolonged preceding action, the final fight was relatively swift thanks to Khoroshenin maintaining his advantage from start to finish. The final hand saw Khoroshenin make an unbeatable flush with KS-3S to oust Ghamrawi’s lowly pair of sevens.
