Harry lays down the Law in Leeds

Harry Law became the first ever GUKPT main event champion in Leeds, taking down the eighth leg of the 2014 tour at the Grosvenor Casino Leeds Westgate from 4-7 September.

Law outlasted the 16 hopefuls who returned for Day 3 from a field of 228 to claim the £32,500 first-place prize.

The day started slowly, taking almost four levels to reach the final table of nine, with Adam Chadwick (£1,250), Martin Sanderson (£1,350), Jamie O’Connor (£1,350), Craig Dawson (£1,650), Jim Gardner (£1,700), Ken Usher (£1,800) and Liam Crawford (£2,050) the casualties along the way.

Michael Howard went into the final nine as the chip leader followed by Mark Evans and Michael Devlin, who was the first to exit getting his chips all-in with pocket twos but running into the eights of Law.

Dom Mahoney, the short stack for most of the day, went out in eighth shoving his 10 big blinds in with AH-8C and running into the AC-KD of Law.

The legend Willie Tann went out in seventh shoving all-in with pocket fives and running into the pocket nines of Howard.

Ben Turnstill was eliminated in sixth place, calling off his chips with AD-8C against the 6H-5H of Howard, who rivered a six.

Five-handed the action tightened up a lot until Martin Paul, chip leader at the start of the day, flipped out as his pocket eights which failed to hold up against the KH-JS of Evans, who turned a jack.

Jonny Cooper went out in fourth place in one of the sickest hands of the day, his pocket kings coming second best against Evans' AS-6D. Evans hitting runner runner for a straight on a 9C-3H-7C-8H-5C board.

But Evans' luck didn't hold and he became the next to leave in third place, getting his stack all-in on a 10D-2D-2S-KC board with 2C-4S for trips but unfortunately running into Law who had flopped a full-house with pocket tens.

Heads-up play lasted around 10 hands before Howard moved all-in over Law's raise on a 10C-4S-4C flop and was snapped called by Law with 8C-10S for top pair.

Howard, with his pocket sevens, was left drawing to two outs and they failed to materialise leaving Law to take the title of GUKPT Leeds champion.
