Delay to UK Gambling Commission changes

Despite months of planning, changes to the UK gambling law won't come into effect on 1 October following the High Court challenge by the Gibraltar Betting and Gaming Association over the UK Gambling Commission plans.

Having mounted a legal challenge soon after they were announced, the GBGA had its case heard in the UK's High Court on 23-24 September.

After hearing the case, Lord Justice Green stated it would be "unrealistic" to make a ruling before the law was due to become active on 1 October and the UKGC will now have to wait until 1 November at the earliest for the new rules to kick in.

The basis of the GBGA's case is that the new gambling laws will contravene European Union trade rules and are "an illegitimate, disproportionate and discriminatory interference with the right to free movement of services".
