Aspey lords it at the Liverpool Leo

The 25/25 Series made its first ever visit to the Grosvenor Leo Casino in Liverpool from 21-23 November, with Warren Aspey emerging as the winner from a field of 124 entries after a four-way deal.

Aspey took the lion's share of the prizepool (£5,920) in the deal, with the other three players - Roy Atherton, Liam Barnard and Andy Lambert - receiving £4,000 each and play continuing to decide who'd take the title and £1,400 in GUKPT vouchers.

Lambert was the first to exit, followed by Barnard in third spot leaving Atherton up against Aspey, who had a 2:1 chip lead, to decide who'd be crowned champion.

The final hand saw Atherton move all-in with pocket fives and Aspey call with A-K, a king on the flop proving decisive and earning Aspey the crown and a £1,080 GUKPT voucher... Atherton also collecting a £340 GUKPT voucher as runner-up.

At the start of day two Barnard was on top of the tree with 230,900 chips, with Mark McVey second on 214,400 and Atherton in third on 192,300 as 33 players returned to decide the prize positions, with 13 set to make the money.

It took more than six hours of poker before the final table was reached but before that stage a bubble-saver was agreed with £260 set aside for the person going out in 14th place.

The final nine were comprised of chip leader Lambert on 735,500, McVey on 415,000, Aspey with 395,000 and Kevin Bloor on 358,000. John Van Der Merwe had the fifth-highest stack on 304,500, with Atherton on 268,500, Jimmy Cinquemani (228,500), Danny Parry (195,000) and Barnard now trailing the field on 190,500.

First out was McVey, followed by Parry and then, after another 90 minutes of play, Bloor, who finished in seventh spot.

And it was another 90 minutes before the next exit, when Cinquemani's shove with 9-7 against A-6 proved fatal. Van Der Merwe made his stand with A-9 but walked into Atherton with A-K and exited in fifth place.
